Linocut Exhibition 3rd September to 31st October 2016
Portico Art Gallery, Riverhead presents an exhibition of limited edition linocuts celebrating the beauty of environment and nature by four talented artists Rob Barnes, Melvyn Evans, Sarah Hudson and Nick Wonham. The print is made from a sheet of linoleum, with the areas that are to be blank cut away with fine cutting. Ink is then rolled over the lino relief and pressed onto the paper. Artists like Picasso and Matisse popularised and demonstrated the potential of the technique in the early 1900s, solidifying its acceptance as a fine art practice.
Rob Barnes is particularly inspired by the stunning countryside and wildlife of Norfolk and Suffolk. His work is almost always about light, shape and shadow within landscapes and seascapes of places such as Aldeburgh, Southwold, Snape and parts of North Norfolk.
Renowned Sevenoaks based artist and regular exhibitor at Portico, Melvyn Evans, is featured once more. Melvyns uniquely stylised depictions of the Kent countryside and coastline are hugely popular amongst gallery visitors.
Kent based artist Sarah Hudson enjoys the simplicity and directness of linoprints, working mainly in black and white with a love for the boldness of the images created. Her work, inspired by wildlife, is humorous, quirky and eye-catching.
Nick Wonham's art is inspired by his love of nature, walks in the countryside and the thrill experienced when seeing a wild animal in its natural environment. He likes to set complimentary colours next to each other to make them sing, resulting in strong, striking images.
